Gauchos Suffer One Point Loss to Spartans

March 8, 2008

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara was defeated 6-5 by No. 10 San Jose State today at the UCSB Recreational Center Pool. The Gauchos stepped up offensively, with goals from Gillian Morgan, Kathryn Nelson, Lindsay Knott, Claire Buchanan, and Lizzie Rouleau. Unfortunately, UCSB's collective scoring effort was not enough for a victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, Rouleau put the Gauchos on the board, scoring a goal in the first minutes of the second. The Spartans responded with another goal, increasing their lead 3-1.

The Gauchos outscored the Spartans two to one in the third quarter. At the start of the third, Knott chipped in a goal decreasing the Spartan's lead 3-2, but the Spartans rallied back with an additional goal. With less than two seconds left on the clock, Morgan made an unbelievable pool length goal, to end the third quarter.

After an impressive shot by Morgan, San Jose State led by one at the beginning of the fourth quarter (4-3). To start off the final quarter, the Spartan's Beth Harberts, who finished with a team high of three goals, scored increasing the Spartan's lead 5-3. Buchanan scored for the Gauchos while the Spartans added one more goal. Nelson scored a final goal for the Gauchos, reducing the Spartan lead 6-5.

The Gauchos were given one last possession to tie the score, but the clock ran out as Katie Kepner made one last goal attempt. The game ended with a devastating Spartan victory.

UCSB now holds an overall record of 4-11, and stands 0-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Gauchos will travel to San Diego tomorrow Sunday, March 9, to take on conference opponent No. 6 San Diego State at 12:00 pm.
