UCSB's Kathy Gregory To Serve as Studio Analyst for CSTV: College Sports Television this Saturday

Dec. 9, 2004

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - It was announced Thursday that UC Santa Barbara head coach Kathy Gregory will serve as a studio analyst for CSTV: College Sports Television during the network's NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship coverage on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Originating from CSTV's New York studios, Gregory will team with host Greg Amsinger as the network broadcasts all four NCAA Regional Final matches from around the country in an eight-hour volleyball marathon beginning at 1:00 p.m. PST. Amsinger and Gregory will breakdown the "Big Dance" between each contest as well as during extended breaks in the action.

The first Regional Final showdown will take place in Green Bay, Wis., followed by Louisville, Ky., at 3:00 p.m., Minneapolis at 5:00 p.m. and finally a 7:00 p.m. clash in Seattle. The pairings for each match will be determined by Regional Semifinal action on Friday, Dec. 10, while the winners of Saturday's contests advance to the NCAA Championships the following weekend in Long Beach, Calif.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to promote the sport I am so passionate about," Gregory said. "It should be a great day of volleyball on CSTV and I think I can lend some meaningful insights to the broadcast as we analyze each match."

Kathy Gregory is the only coach UCSB women's volleyball has ever known, guiding the program to a 744-307 (.708) record since accepting the reigns of the team in 1975. In her 30 years at the helm - the longest tenure in the history of Gaucho Athletics - "The Queen" has guided Santa Barbara to 20 or more victories 26 times, while her teams have finished the season ranked amongst the nation's top-25 on 27 occasions. She can boast five NCAA Sweet 16 appearances in the past eight years (including three Elite Eights) as well as National Coach of the Year honors in 1993. Gregory, a member of the Volleyball Hall of Fame and currently the fifth-winningest active coach in the NCAA Division I ranks, has also earned Big West Conference Coach of the Year acclaim in each of the last three seasons. In addition, she has previous television broadcasting experience as a color commentator for both ESPN and Prime Sports.

In 2004 Gregory's Gauchos won their third consecutive Big West title and finished with a 24-4 overall record, reaching a high national ranking of No. 8 in the USA Today/CSTV Top-25 Coaches' Poll. UCSB concluded its season on Dec. 4 with a loss at Georgia Tech in the second round of the Big Dance. Santa Barbara is one of only four programs in the country - along with Pacific, Penn State and Stanford - to qualify for all 24 NCAA Championships dating back to the tournament's inception in 1981.
