UCSB Rolls Past Roadrunners and Eagles
Over the weekend the Gauchos swept a pair of Big West Conference match-ups with wins over New Mexico State and North Texas. On Thursday the Gauchos defeated the Aggies in Las Cruces 15-2, 15-3, 15-4 behind Roberta Gehlke's match-high 11 kills. On Saturday, UCSB topped North Texas 15-1, 15-4, 15-4, and were again led by Gehlke, who collected 18 kills and eight digs. Freshman Danielle Bauer added a career best 11 kills and hit .563 to help lead the Gauchos past the Lady Eagles.
The Queen's Court
UC Santa Barbara head coach Kathy Gregory became the 14th Division I women's volleyball coach in history to record 600 career victories when the Gauchos defeated the University of Illinois in this season's opener. Currently the tenth-winningest active coach in the nation, Gregory enters this weekend's play with a career record of 614-266 (.697) and is in her 24th season of coaching Division I women's volleyball, all at Santa Barbara. Gregory has guided UCSB to all 18 NCAA Tournaments, one of only four schools (the others are Pacific, Penn State and Stanford) to compete in every postseason since 1981.
The Poll
The Gauchos remained ranked ninth in the nation this week in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches Poll after sweeping a pair of Big West Conference matches at New Mexico State and North Texas last weekend.
Battle Of The Best
Tonight's match-up between Loyola Marymount and UCSB will feature the top two offensive players in the nation, Sarah McFarland and Roberta Gehlke. McFarland and Gehlke are currently the top two offensive threats in tthe country in terms of kills per game. McFarland, a junior outside hitter for the Lions, brings a 7.85 kills per game mark into tonight's match-up, while Gehlke, a two-time AVCA All-American for the Gauchos, sports a very impressive 5.75 mark.

Scouting The Lions
The Lions enter tonight's match with a 13-6 overall record, and 3-2 WCC mark. LMU is led by junior Sarah McFarland who in turn leads the nation in kills per game with 7.85. McFarland has already taken 1,045 swings this season, over 700 more than the next closest Lion. UCSB has won 20 of the 23 meetings between the schools, including a four-game win at the Thunderdome last season.
Scouting The Wolfpack
Nevada enters this weekend's play with an overall record of 13-6 and and 6-2 Big West Conference mark, tied with Utah State for tops in the Eastern Division. UCSB has won all 14 previous meetings with the Nevada, including a three-game sweep of the 'Pack last season in Reno. Shannon Stemler leads Nevada with 3.61 kills per game while Suzanne Stonebarger leads with with 3.37 digs per game.,
Scouting The Aggies
After starting the season 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the Big West Conference, Utah State has rattled off seven consecutive wins to improve to 8-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big West. Entering the weekend the Aggies were tied with the University of Nevada for first place in the Big West's Eastern Division. Amy Crosbie leads the Aggie attack with 3.80 kills per game, while Melissa Schoepf paces Utah State with 2.37 digs per game.

Gehlke Closes In On 2000
- With 339 kills already this season, senior outside hitter Roberta Gehlke now has 1,914 career kills, the most in Gaucho history and second most in the history of the Big West Conference. She recently passed Teee Williams-Sanders of the University of Hawaii, and needs only 86 more kills to become only the second player in the history of the Big West to accumulate over 2,000 kills.
Ace In The Hole
- Establishing herself as one of the best servers in the nation, sophomore middle blocker Jutta Weissenborn currently leads the Big West in service aces with 32 and 0.56 per game. Even more impressive is the serving numbers she has put up in conference play. She has collected 21 aces in only 26 games of action during Big West play, averaging 0.81 aces per game. Weissenborn in also fifth in the conference in hitting percentage during conference matches, hitting at .418.
