Gauchos Open Baden Thanksgiving Classic With 3-1 Win Over Temple

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team opened the Baden Thanksgiving Classic with a 25-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-22 win over first-time opponent Temple on Friday evening at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid.

With the win, UCSB improves to 12-18 on the season while Temple, which plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference, falls to 15-20.

The Gauchos posted a .322 team hitting percentage in the match including a match-high .394 clip (16k, 3e, 33a) in the fourth game.

Junior Lauren McLaughlin had a team-leading 19 kills and 11 digs in the match while hitting .312. Sophomore Rebecca Saraceno led the team for points tallying 16 digs on 28 attempts with three errors for a season-best .464 clip. The Redondo Beach, Calif. native also had three aces, nine digs and two blocks in the win.

Also contributing a strong performance for the Gauchos was freshman Stacey Schmidt, who posted 14 kills and a .303 clip. She also had three block assists. Rounding out the players with double-digit kills was senior Brett Quirarte who tallied 10 along with her team-high four block assists.

Freshman setter Dana Vargas handed out 52 assists and also had four kills, an ace, and eight digs. Junior libero Leigh Stephenson posted a career-high three aces and nine digs. The Nipomo, Calif. native is just four digs away from setting the UCSB record for digs in a single season.

UCSB will continue action at the Baden Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday when they face Yale at noon. Following their match with the Bulldogs, the Gauchos will complete the 2007 season with a pairing against Pittsburgh at 5 p.m.
