Tucson, Ariz. - The 24th-ranked UCSB women's volleyball team advanced to the championship game of the Four Points University Plaza Thanksgiving Tournament with a 30-23, 30-23, 30-25 victory over San Diego State Friday night.
The Gaucho sweep in the McKale Center improves Santa Barbara's record to 17-12 overall and sets up a Saturday showdown with host school and fourth-ranked Arizona for the tourney championship.
Santa Barbara out-hit the Aztecs .257 to .238, finishing with 48 team kills. Serving was also a deciding factor in the match, as UCSB recorded seven aces compared to just one by SDSU, which fell to 15-12 on the season.
Individually, the Gauchos were led by junior middle blocker Danielle Bauer, who recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 14 kills and 15 digs. Meanwhile freshman middle blocker Niki Carroll established a new career high of 10 kills, and connected at a stellar .571 clip. The third Gaucho to reach double-digit put-aways was sophomore outside hitter Erica Menzel with 12.
Saturday's championship contest of the Four Points University Plaza
Thanksgiving Tournament will begin at 12:00 p.m. PST. Preceeding that will
be a consolation match between San Diego State and the University of Denver,
which fell to Arizona in Friday's other showdown.
