Gauchos Sweep UC Davis in Final Home Match of the Season

Nov. 18, 2005

Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - On a night that honored UC Santa Barbara's first-ever four-time Big West Champion senior Megan Blackshire, the UCSB women's volleyball rolled to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-26, 30-23) sweep over UC Davis. Junior Janine Sandell led the Gauchos with a match-high 20 kills as the 2005 Big West Conference Champions improved to 18-8 overall on the season.

UCSB began its home season-finale with a convincing 30-22 victory in game one by limiting the Aggies to a meager .103 hitting percentage, their lowest of the match.

The Gauchos continued the onslaught into game two, opening up as much as a ten-point lead, in fact, they had Davis at just 19 points when they first reached game-point at 29-19. But the Aggies fought back with a 7-0 run to bring the score to 29-26 before the hosts finally sealed game two for a 2-0 lead.

Davis kept its hot-hand after the halftime break jump out to an early three-point lead at 4-1. The Aggies managed to hold onto the lead until the Gauchos tied it up at 11-11 before running away with the game and the match 30-23. Santa Barbara hit a match-high .312 in game three, while Davis hit .120, also its highest percentage of the night.

Sandell led all hitters with 20 kills on a match-high 52 swings for a .269 hitting percentage. Lauren McLaughlin was second on the squad with 11 kills to go with her team-high two service aces, she was also second on the team with 11 digs in the match. Libero Emily Hendrickson tied for the match-high with UCD's Nicole Brown with 13 digs lead the Gauchos.

The Aggies' Nicole Read paced the visitors with 13 kills, swinging a match-best .407 on 27 swings. Olivia Waldowski led UCSB, hitting .455 with 7 kills on 11 attempts.

The Gauchos finish regular season play with three matches on the road beginning with Tuesday showdown against Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles.
