SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team defeated Santa Clara in four games Tuesday evening behind freshman middle blocker Simone Kuhn's 18 kills and 11 blocks. Kuhn also registered 12 digs, notching her first triple-double of the season. With the victory UCSB improves to 18-6 on the season while Santa Clara falls to 20-3.

The Gauchos took a 12-7 lead in game one, but Santa Clara fought back with a six point run to take the lead at 13-12. Ynez Carasco led the Bronco comeback in game one with eight kills and 11 digs in the opener, leading Santa Clara to the 16-14 victory.

UCSB used their defense to win game two 15-9 behind Kuhn's four blocks and Brooke Niles' six digs. The Gauchos limited the Broncos to a .018 hitting percentage in game two to tie up the match headed into the intermission.

After the break it was more of the same for the Gauchos, as defense was the key to the victory. Five different Gauchos registered double-digit digs and as a team UCSB recorded a season-high 20 blocks, as the Broncos were limited to a .126 attack percentage for the match.

With freshman outside hitter Erica Menzel out with a sprained ankle, junior Brie Lampe and sophomore Courtney Guerra picked up the slack in her absence, with 11 and 15 kills respectively. Lampe led all players with a .429 attack percentage while Guerra also notched 18 digs. Danielle Bauer finished with 17 kills and a team-high 20 digs, and Brooke Niles had ten kills with no errors in 28 swings (.357) to go along with 20 digs.

Becky Potter led Santa Clara with 21 kills while Carasco finished with 13 kills and a game-high 23 digs. Amy kohl and Brook Terhune were the only other Broncos with double-digit kills, ending with 16 and 15 respectively.

 

 

Next up for the Gauchos is a trip to Moscow, Idaho for a Saturday match with conference foe Idaho at 7:00 p.m.
