Sophomore middle blocker Danielle Bauer hammered home 20 kills and hit .567 to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 15-13, 15-7 and 15-5 win over host San Diego State at the Diggin' Tournament on Saturday.
The victory over the Aztecs gave the Gauchos a share of the tournament championships along with Arizona and the University of San Diego. All three schools went 2-1 in the season-opening get-together.
Bauer, who along with freshman middle blocker Simone Kuhn, was named to the All-Tournament Team, finished the three matches with a team-leading 59 kills. Freshman outside hitter Erica Menzel had 12 kills against SDSU, her third straight double-digit kill effort. As a team, the Gauchos outhit the Aztecs .246 to .148 and UCSB had 46 digs, led by Menzel's 12.
The 14th-ranked Gauchos, now 2-1 on the year, will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Denver to take on Denver University. UCSB will then play three matches at Fort Collins, Colorado. On Friday, September 8, they take on Drake and Auburn and on Saturday, they take on the host school, Colorado State.
