Sept. 2, 2000
San Diego, Calif. -
In its first match of the 2000 season, the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team played well both offensively and defensively. In their second match, the Gauchos didn't play particularly well offensively or defensively, losing to the University of San Diego 12-15, 15-13, 15-5 and 15-11.
UCSB jumped out quickly, not only winning the first game but hitting an outstanding .450 in the process. But it was downhill from there. In the final three games of the match, the Gauchos never hit better than .161 and in those final three, they hit a combined .137. Overall, UCSB hit just .200 for the match. San Diego, on the other hand, hit .355 for the contest, including .586 in game three. In addition, the Gauchos produced only six blocks in the four games.
Santa Barbara was led by junior middle blocker Brieanna Lampe who had 19 kills and hit .400. Sophomore Danielle Bauer, who led the Gauchos with 20 kills in their win over Arizona on Friday, equaled Lampe's output with 19 kills, but she hit only .222. Freshman Erica Menzel had 18 kills, but she too struggled with her hitting percentage and finished at .191.
The Gauchos, now 1-1, are scheduled to take on host San Diego State on Saturday night.
