Sophomore outside hitter Danielle Bauer had 20 kills and hit .368 and freshman outside hitter Erica Menzel piled up 16 kills and hit .370 as the 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team defeated the University of Arizona, 15-3, 15-4, 5-15, 1-15 and 15-8 on Friday at Cox Arena on the San Diego State campus.
The Gauchos rode a rollercoaster to victory in their 2000 season opener, hitting a combined .456 in the first two games of the match as they outscored the Wildcats, 30-7. In games three and four, however, UCSB was limited to a dismal .127 mark and Arizona won the two games by a combined 30-6 mark, leveling the match at two games apiece.
In game five, UCSB hit .500 and coasted to victory, 15-8, but it was their defense that made the difference. Menzel, a freshman out of San Marcos High School, finished with a match-high 12 digs to go along with her 16 kills and match-high four service aces. Junior setter Brooke Rundle had 11 digs in addition to 52 assists. Another freshman, middle blocker Simone Kuhn, a native of Luzern, Switzerland, had 11 digs, three solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
Arizona was paced by outside hitter Marian Dalee who had 19 kills and hit .586. As a team, the Wildcats outhit the Gauchos .321 to .309, but UCSB came up with 51 digs as compared to their opponents' 44. Arizona also had seven service errors to UCSB's three and the Gauchos had eight service aces.
UCSB will continue action in the San Diego State Tournament when they play a pair of matches tomorrow. The Gauchos will take on the University of San Diego, a winner over San Diego State tonight, in the morning and then they will take on the host Aztecs in the tourney's final match tomorrow evening.
