Gaucho Men's Track & Field Win Dual Meet Over Cal Poly for Undefeated Regular Season

Cal Poly Dual Results

The UCSB men earned a 108-94 victory over visiting Cal Poly sparked by victories in 11 events and one school record. The victory sealed the men's first undefeated regular season. The women came up short loosing 107-96 to the Mustangs after having won the last two meetings between the teams. The Gauchos accumulated 15 NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks during the meet.

The Gaucho men started the meet off on the track with a 1-2 finish in the steeple for 8 team points as Junior Mike Powers took first in a NCAA Regional Qualifying 9:03.15 and Senior Micah Tyhurst was second in a NCAA Regional Qualifying 9:04.86. Despite some shaky hand-offs, the men's 4 x 100 meter relay was able to run just off their seasonal best taking the win in 41.13. The men's 1500 proved to be the most exciting event of the day as seven men ran 3:49 or faster. Senior Mike Chavez led the way for the Gauchos in 3:43.80, a school record by 3 seconds and a time that currently ranks him top 20 in the NCAA. Freshman Brian Sung led a 1-2 sweep with fellow freshman Andrew Johnston; Sung is unbeaten at home this season. The men's 100 marked Senior Ryan Donnelly's return to health as he was able to pull of the victory in 10.90 after a slow start. Donnelly returned with a personal best in the 200 of 21.69 for first followed by sophomore Jason Newland in a personal best 21.87. In the 800 meter run Senior Tetlo Emmen was the winner in 1:51.24 in front of two Cal Poly runners who also dipped under 1:52. Sophomore Elmer Guzman ran a personal best of over a second to win the 400 hurdles in 53.38.

In the field, UCSB went 1-3 in the shot put, all NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks, led by junior Scott Anderson in 56' 8.25". The throws also produced a 1-3 sweep in the hammer with a win by Senior Eugene Bradley and a huge personal best by junior Reif Lawson with a NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 199' 10.25" for second place. Junior Nick Sheuerman took the dual meet victory in the discus with a personal best of 148' 1". The high jump produced a personal best for junior Jacob Maus, as he jumped 6' 11.75".

The Gaucho women started off just as strong in the 3000 steeplechase with a 35 second victory by junior Bethany Nickless. Junior Kerry Gamble had a strong showing in the 400 meters in 55.27 for the win. Hadas Moser took the 3000 meters in a time of 10:36.47, 27 seconds ahead of the closest Cal Poly runner.

Senior Amy Haapanen swept the discus (166' 3.5"), shot put(50' 10.5") and hammer(210' 10.75") all in NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks. Senior Heather Quinn was just behind Happanen in all three events with three NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks of her own.
