SAN lUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Junior Desiree Leek finished second in the 1,500m final, running a personal best 4:32.93 on Sunday at the Cal/Nevada Championships in San Luis Obispo. Junior Cosette Smith was 4th in the 3,000m final in a personal best 9:50.31, the sixth fastest time in Gaucho history.
Leek surged to the lead on the backstretch of the final lap of the 1,500, but was overtaken by CS Northridge's Drea Palacio who won in 4:32.10. Leek held off Big West Confereence rival Kathryn Schegel of Cal Poly for second. Smith followed the lead pack through 1,600m, moved into third on the sixth lap and held on for fourth place in the 3,000m final. The pair of junior distance runners were the lone scorers for UCSB in the meet combining for 14 points.
In Saturday's trials, sophomore Roseann Peters ran a lifetime best 2:14.91 in the 800m, and narrowly missed the final by just .11 of a second. Freshman Megan Lewis also recorded the fastest time not to make the finals in the 1,500 trials, taking 5th in her heat at 4:44.31, just .80 off the final time qualifier.
Freshman Lauri Schakett ran personal bests in both hurdle events, dipping under the Big West standard in the 400mH at 64.76, and posting a 15.98 in the 100mH. Freshman Asley Coelho also notched a PR in the 400mH, crossing the line at 67.28.
Sophomore twins Lauren and Lindsay Christman ran 59.00 and 59.47 respectively in Saturday's 400m trials.
