Our duel meet season has come to a close. Both the men and women's teams finished the season in fine fashion with two wins apiece against veritable conference rivals UC Davis and University of the Pacific. Theses meets always elicit exciting races and lots of fanfare. Lots of Gaucho alumni were in attendance for the UOP meet and there is certainly no love lost between our two teams. The women had not defeated UOP in a duel meet in over eight years so you can imagine our pleasure at unseating them.

The men concluded with the most successful record in head coach, Gregg Wilson's, 32 years of coaching. The women too made significant strides and only garnered losses in competitions against Pac-10 opponents. This past weekend was our last opportunity to race before the conference championships that run February 21st through the 23rd. We have now entered the promised land--taper! The next two weeks will consist of fine tuning strokes, developing race strategies, and resting after a long and physically taxing season.

As the end of the season and championship meets approach, our whole team is shifting gears and is focusing on qualifying more athletes for the NCAA Championships in March. We have already qualified two women: sophomore sprinter, Anne Marie May, and freshman breaststroker, Sara Nicponski. Junior, Katy Freeman holds a consideration cut in the 200 breaststroke. The men have yet to automatically qualify any swimmers but sophomores Matt Bartlett, Chris Wiggin, and Scott Vogelgesang and junior Bradley Matsumoto all swam consideration times at the Husky Invitational. Our team is also focused on traveling relays to the championships. Many have proved their worth with consideration times but hopefully the Big West will allow both teams to automatically qualify relays for the NCAA championships.

Countdown to conference: 16 days!!!!!
