The long awaited (two and a half week) return to Campus Pool has come to pass-we are back!! And just in time to put in two weeks of quality training that will ensure a guilt-free Thanksgiving for the UCSB Swim Team. Before we can take off and enjoy Turkey Day in all its deliciousness, we have two meets to win.
This coming weekend, both the men and women will compete in a tri-meet against Cal Poly and UC San Diego at Campus Pool. We will have they opportunity to show our versatility, as many people will be swimming off events. It will also be an excellent barometer of where our conditioning and racing are at this point in the season. Many groups are transitioning into new a more speed-oriented training phase and are eager to see where improvements can be made as we gear up for intense racing after the holiday.
The weekend of the seventeenth, both teams will head up to Bakersfield for a non-conference meet. Everyone is especially looking forward to lunch at the home of sophomore, Jon Kraetsch. His parents have so nicely offered to feed 60 hungry swimmers…I wonder if they realize what they are getting themselves into.
Aside from all the work we've been putting in at the pool and in the weight room, the whole team has been very involved in recruiting efforts. We have our last recruiting trip of the fall this weekend and we are bringing in some of the best high school swimmers in the state. Our championship reputation, has allowed us to continue to interest more and more talented athletes. Recruiting has really moved in an exciting direction in the four years I've been here. At this point, we have commitments from one woman and three men.
Besides looking forward to our meets, there is definite building anticipation for next week's NCAA signing period. Hopefully we can steal some away from our Southern California and Big West rivals and add new Gauchos to our family.
