We are one month into our season. In that short time, we have welcomed new freshman and a new coach into our Gaucho family, started school, begun a grueling doubles schedule, and competed against each other in an inter-squad meet.
This year so far has been characterized by an increased intensity and heightened expectations. We are two-time defending champions in a conference that improves every year, and the men are looking to come back from an unexpected and disappointing second-place finish to UC Irvine. We are preparing now for a conference meet that is four months out and you wouldn't believe the excitement.
The inter-squad meet, which pitted the Blue against the Gold, was an excellent gauge of where we are this early in the season. After a week of tough workouts-even one just an hour before the meet began-both teams raced hard and finished incredibly strong. This meet was a vital dress rehearsal for future competitions. The support shown for one another as well as the ability to persevere even when we are tired and broken down will only help us as we go through the season.
This coming weekend we will be able to capitalize on what we learned through the inter-squad meet against UCLA and Oregon State. This is a huge test for our women as Pac-10 teams are highly competitive year after year. We will have an added advantage though in the loud voices of our men's team. Their raucous cheering took Oregon State out of the meet two years ago and we are hoping their support coupled with focus and the hard work we've put in will be a successful combination. This meet has ultimately proved to be a jumping off point for two consecutive championship seasons, Saturday we are beginning our quest for a third.
