Gauchos Post Another Dual Meet Victory, Defeat Cal Poly

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara swim teams defeated Big West Conference opponent Cal Poly in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Gauchos' Campus Pool. The men captured a 155-97 victory over the Mustangs while the Gaucho women defeated Cal Poly, 155-101.

With the win, the UCSB men improved to 3-0 in dual meet action this season and the women improved to 4-1. On the men's side, UCSB captured first place in 12 of the 14 events swam and the women posted 13 top-finishes.

On the women's side, the Gauchos opened the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay. The team of Naomi Javanifard, Sara Nicponski, Erin Yamamoto and Nadia Dwidar posted a time of 3:51.58.

Four women went on to win two individual events apiece. Sophomore Lindsay Gaudinier took the top honors in the 500 freestyle (5:03.20) and the 200 free (1:53.64). May dominated the sprint freestyle events posting a time of 51.12 in the 100 free and clocking in at 23.26 in the 50.

Senior Katy Freeman picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the breaststroke events. She clocked in at 2:18.15 in the 200 and posted a time of 1:04.42 in the 100 breast.

Senior Erin Yamamoto rounded out the women's double event winners with the top times in the 200 butterfly (2:06.19) and the 100 fly (56.54).

The women concluded the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay. The team of Nadia Dwidar, Javanifard, Courtney Bauer and May clocked in with a time of 1:35.11.

 

 

On the men's end, there were three repeat winners for UCSB. Senior Chris Good took first place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.46 and also picked up a victory in the 100 back (50.98).

Senior Joe Wood took first in both the 100 free (46.33) and the 200 free (1:39.43), while teammate Danny McClary dominated the butterfly events posting a time of 1:50.92 in the 200 and a mark of 49.39 in the 100.

The men's 400 medley relay consisting of Kevin Ferguson, Jeff Sudbury, McClary and Dan Morris posted the day's top time, clocking in at 3:25.10. The men swept the relay events with a victory in the 200 free relay. Wood, Sudbury, Kevin Kuhn and Bradley Matsumoto finished in 1:22.84.

Both the UCSB men's and women's swim teams will be back in action Dec. 4-6 at the Husky Invitational that will be hosted by the University of Washington in Federal Way, Wash.
