SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -
Cal Poly used two standout pitching performances and some timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader visiting UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at Bob Janssen Field by scores of 3-2 and 4-0.
With the win the Mustangs improve to 34-16 overall and 14-6 in conference play while UCSB falls to 26-21 overall and 9-11 in the Big West.
Sophomore Emily Hively, making only her fourth start of the season, shutout the Gauchos on four hits in earning her second win of the season against no defeats in the second game of the doubleheader.
Hively walked and struck out one in the seven inning shutout.
Senior Erin Myers provided Hively with the lead and the only run she would need with her 10th home run of the season over the left field fence in the second inning.
Cal Poly would add a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to seal the win.
Lindsey Sommer (10-7) took the loss for the Gauchos, allowing four runs, three earned in five 2/3 innings. Carly Harmon entered the game in the sixth in relief. Sommer's allowed seven hits while walking three and striking out four.
In the first game Cal Poly broke a scorless game in the third with three runs thanks to a wind-blown double to right scoring two.
Amy Jo Nazarenus opened the inning with a single to left and advanced to second one out later on a Lisa Modglin single through the left side.
After Chelsy Green hit into a fielders choice, (Nazarenus out at third) Chelsy Stoufer hit a deep fly ball that carried over Danielle Meyers in right field for a two RBI double.
Freshman Sara Iwata followed with a single to right scoring Stoufer.
UCSB got two back in the sixth when Meyers singled to right scoring Jessica Hejna and Brittany Putich. The inning ended with one runner on when Karyna Wilkerson flied to deep right.

Senior Eva Nelson went the distance for the Mustangs, picking up her 15th win of the season against nine defeats. Nelson alowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
Jennifer Davis (13-11) took the loss when she alowed three runs and seven hits. Davis had six strikeouts while walking two.
The Gauchos and Mustangs conclude the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
