UCSB Falls in Finale With No. 24 Long Beach State

May 8, 2005

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team was defeated 2-1 in nine innings by Big West-leading Long Beach State Sunday at the 49er softball complex. With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 26-19 overall and 9-9 in Big West competition.

UCSB scored first for the third straight game but was held to a total of four runs, as LBSU came from behind to win all three contests.

The Gauchos scored their only run of the game Sunday in the third inning when shortstop Brittany Putich led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, second baseman Kendra Singley hit a single that scored Putich and gave Santa Barbara a 1-0 lead.

Long Beach State tied the score an inning later on a solo homerun by Oli Keohohou.

UCSB starting pitcher Jennifer Davis battled the 49ers' Meredith Cervenka through eight innings, as neither hurler allowed another run.

After the Gauchos were retired in the ninth, Keohohou drove in the winning run with two on and two outs, and LBSU prevailed, 2-1.

Cervenka picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits and struck out seven in nine innings of work. She improved to 22-8 with the victory.

Davis took the loss for the Gauchos, falling to 13-10 on the year. The sophomore allowed two runs on six hits while striking out eight in 8.2 innings pitched.

The Gauchos return to action Friday, May 13, when they travel to Cal Poly for their final regular season series, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
