Logan, Utah -
Senior catcher Jami Trinidad hit her second grand slam of the series to lead the UC Santa Barbara softball team (33-17, 8-6) to a 12-6 victory over host Utah State (6-33, 1-11) and complete the three game Big West Conference series sweep.
UCSB opened up with four runs in the top of the first and another four runs in the top of second off of Trinidad's grand slam to go up 8-2 after two innings of play. The Aggies responded throughout the game, matching the Gauchos's scoring, but they could never catch up the potent UCSB offense.
Junior Katie Junge picked up the win in the circle to improve to 3-0 on the year in a complete game performance.
It was a record-breaking weekend for the Gauchos as another four records either fell or where tied during the trip to Utah. With an 11 RBI performance by Trinidad in the series, the senior shattered the school record for RBI's in season. With at least six games remaining, the Norwalk, Calif. native already has 41 ribbies on the season, surpassing Kendra Wood's mark of 38 set in 2000. Trinidad also tied the UCSB record for total bases in a game yesterday with nine in game two.
As a team the Gauchos set records for stolen bases in a season, running their total to 89, breaking the previous record of 86 set in 1982, they also put themselves in the books with 29 total bases in game two against the Aggies on Saturday.
Although each pitcher on UCSB's staff earned a win in the series with Utah State it was the bats of the Gauchos that got the job done. Santa Barbara hit .470 as a team with 34 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, and five homeruns for a .725 slugging percentage.
Trinidad led the team going 7-for-8 (.875), with three homeruns, two grand slams, five runs scored, one double, one walk and an astonishing 11 RBI's, all amounting to a 2.175 slugging percentage. Freshman Kristen Mann, playing in only two of the three contests, went 5-for-8 with one double, one triple, one homerun, four runs scored and four RBI.
