Softball Stumbles And Drops Doubleheader At Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team stumbled, dropping a doubleheader at Cal Poly on Friday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. Cal Poly took game one, 6-1, before winning game two, 2-0.

The wins improve the Mustangs to 19-29, 5-6 in the Big West. The Gauchos fell to 29-16, 4-6 in the Big West.

In game one, Cal Poly jumped on the board in the third, when after singles from Kaitlyn Wilson and AmyJo Nazarenus, Roni Sparrey singled to score Wilson for a 1-0 Mustang lead.

Cal Poly added to the lead in the fifth, when Holly Ballard hit an RBI single to score Nazarenus. Natalie Carrillo then added an RBI double to score Chelsy Stoufer for a 3-0 lead.

The Mustang offense capped off the game with three runs in the sixth. As the Mustangs loaded the bases, a wild pitch scored Nazarenus. Ballard then singled to score Stoufer and Sparrey for the six-run advantage. The hit capped off a 3-for-4 hitting effort with three RBIs for Ballard.

Jamie Gelbart took the win, going the distance allowing one run on six hits and striking out three. She is now 8-9 on the season. Loren Thornburg took the loss and is now 13-10.

In game two, with no score heading into the fourth, Shannon Brooks singled to score Stoufer, who had reached on an error, for the Mustangs' first run. The Mustangs added to the lead in the sixth, when Carrie Schubert singled score pinch runner Stephanie Payan to make the score 2-0.

Eva Nelson picked up her second shutout of the season, allowing only two hits. She is now 5-9 on the season. Carly Harmon suffered the loss and falls to 14-6.

The Mustangs and Gauchos wrap up the series on Saturday at noon at Bob Janssen Field.
