SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Lindsey Herrin went 1-for-2 and hit her record-setting eleventh homerun of the season, leading the UC Santa Barbara softball team to a 9-0 victory over UC Davis in five innings at Campus Diamond Sunday. Jennifer Davis and Lindsey Sommer combined to toss a four-hit shutout, as the Gauchos improve to 22-14 overall.
"Our hitters really took care of business today," head coach Kristy Schroeder said. "We hit the ball well with runners in scoring position."
The Gauchos jumped on the Aggies early when Herrin hit a three run bomb to right center field in the bottom of the first inning. With the homer, the senior first baseman has now set the UCSB single season homerun mark for the second consecutive year. With 11 round trippers this season (and ten a year ago), Herrin is just three shy of breaking Tonya Dias' record of 23 career homeruns in only her second season as a Gaucho.
Junior third baseman Karyna Wilkerson scored on a past ball in the second and sophomore second baseman Kendra Singley added an RBI double to put the Gauchos on top, 5-0.
The lead swelled to 6-0 an inning later after starting pitcher Davis hit her seventh homer of the season, a solo shot down the right field line. The Whittier, Calif. native is now eighth on UCSB's career homerun chart with nine.
Singley drove in her second run of the day in the fourth, shortstop Brittany Putich scored with the bases loaded after Davis was hit by a pitch and catcher Danielle Meyers added an RBI single to give the Gauchos a 9-0 lead.

Davis, who leads the Big West Conference in ERA, turned in another strong effort in the circle, holding the Aggies scoreless for the second time in two days. The sophomore pitched her way out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the second, rebounding to strike out the side and again in the fourth, when UC Davis had runners on second and third with one out. She allowed four hits while striking out six and walking one.
Lindsey Sommer came on in relief in the fifth and did not allow a hit, preserving the mercy rule victory.
Davis improves to 13-7 on the year with the victory while Sommer picked up her second save.
Rachel Kelly took the loss for the Aggies, falling to 3-12 on the year.
UCSB returns to action Saturday, April 23, when they travel to Stockton for a matchup with Big West rival Pacific beginning at 12:00 p.m.
