Two Quick Strikes Gives Softball A Doubleheader Sweep Over Centenary College 5-0 And 1-0

April 15, 2003

Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team used first inning runs in both games of a non-conference doubleheader to sweep Centenary College 5-0 and 1-0. UCSB now stands at 29-14 on the season and Centenary falls to 18-28.

Freshman pitcher Carly Harmon struck-out eight in game one enroute to her fourth shutout victory of the season, improving to a team-best 14-5 on the season. Junior Katie Junge, in a rare pitching performance this season, got the shutout win in game two to move to 2-0 on year, striking out seven along the way.

The Ladies' Janis Kelley (2-2) was credited with the loss in game one and game two's loss went to Cheyenne Daries (8-13).

UCSB jumped on Centenary early in game one, putting their first two batters, Leslie Simien and Chantal Pershing, aboard with no outs. After an E.J. Lauchland sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, Jami Trinidad sent a shot down the leftfield line in foul territory that was deep enough to score Simien from third.

The one run in the first proved to be enough as Harmon shut down the Ladies' bats, allowing just four hits on the day while walking only one.

The Gauchos tacked on four more insurance runs in the sixth to give the game its final 5-0 score. Lauchland finished game one going 3-for-3 with two RBI's and a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Karyna Wilkerson, making just her second start of the season, went a perfect 2-for-2 with one walk.

Game two started much like the first for Santa Barbara, except this time it was Pershing who was driven in by Trinidad. With Pershing on second after a bunt and a steal, Trinidad line a shot into leftfield for her second game-winning, and third overall, RBI of the twinbill.

Trinidad finished the doubleheader going 4-for-6, with three RBI and one double. Lauchland also went 4-for-6, with two RBI's of her own. Simien ended the day with three hits in seven at-bats, two runs scored, and another driven in. No Centenary players tallied more than two hits in the doubleheader, as Santa Barbara out hit the Ladies 18-9.

The Gauchos, third place in the Big West (4-4), resume conference play this weekend when they travel to Cal Poly for a three-game series, starting Friday, April 18th. Both Friday's doubleheader and Saturday's single game are scheduled for a 12 noon start.
