Women's Soccer's Krystal Sandza Named Big West Offensive Player Of The Year, First Team All-Big West

Nov. 13, 2002

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sophomore forward Krystal Sandza (Poway, Calif.) became the second UC Santa Barbara women's soccer player in as many years to be selected Big West Offensive Player of the Year, and she, along with senior midfielder Jen Codington (Concord, Calif.) and sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich (Sacramento, Calif), were selected First Team All-Big West, it was announced today.

Sandza, a First Team All-Big West selection as a freshman, scored 25 goals and eight assists this season, a total of 58 points. The 25 goals rank third on UCSB's all-time single-season list and the 58 assists rank fifth. In just two seasons, Sandza has now scored 32 goals and 11 assists for 75 points and she ranks fourth all-time in goals and seventh in points. Her five-goal performance in a win at Air Force on October 6 was a UCSB record and the second-best performance in the nation this season. Finally, in addition to her five-goal explosion, Sandza had two three-goal hat tricks and four two-goal outings.

Borcich, the 2001 Big West Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, had an outstanding second-year for the Gauchos. She finished second on the team and in the league with 17 goals and 41 points. She also added seven assists. Her 17 goals were the ninth highest total in UCSB history and her 41 points ranked tied for ninth. In two seasons, Borcich has now scored 28 goals, which ranks sixth all-time and 70 points, which ranks eighth all-time. She also has 14 assists. Borcich closed the season on a roll. Prior to getting shutout in the finale at Cal Poly, she had scored goals in seven straight matches.

Codington, a Second Team All-Big West choice last year, earned her first First Team All-Big West honors this year. The Gaucho "quarterback" scored three goals and added eight assists for 14 points, but more than points, she really directed the UCSB attack and without a doubt, she was one of the team's leaders.

In addition to the three first team selections, freshman midfielder Kristyn Bright, freshman defender Katie Cooper and junior defender Emilee Schwimmer were earned Honorable Mention All-Big West honors.
