UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at UC Riverside

Match No. 19
Sunday, November 3, 2002, 1:00 p.m.
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at Cal State Fullerton

The Gaucho Record
UC Santa Barbara improved to 12-3-2 overall and 5-0-1 in Big West play with home wins last weekend over UC Irvine (3-1) and Long Beach State (1-0). UCSB closed out its home schedule with the two victories. The 12 wins are the most by a Gaucho team since 1993 when they won 13.

UCSB Moves Into First Place, Take To the Road
With its 5-0-1 Big West record, UCSB now has 16 points and has moved into first-place in the league. The Gauchos lead Cal Poly (5-1-0) and Cal State Fullerton (5-1-0) by one point and UC Irvine by three points. To secure first-place, however, the Gauchos will have to take charge on the road. UCSB ends the season with road games at UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly, a tough task.

Streak Is Longest Since 1990
Although UCSB's unbeaten streak of eight matches is modest, it is the longest the program has produced since the 1990 campaign. The Gauchos are 7-0-1 in their last eight matches. Last season, UCSB had a five match winning streak. The 1990 Gauchos opened the season with a 12-0-1 record and a 13 match unbeaten streak, a streak that remains the longest in school history. In 1989, UCSB won 12 matches in a row, also a school record.

On The Stumpf
Paul Stumpf is in his fourth season at UC Santa Barbara. He enters this week's action with a record of 40-28-5. Last season, he guided UCSB to an 11-7-1 record, and within to one game of the Big West Championship. 2001 marked the first time that UCSB had finished at over the .500 mark since 1993. UCSB has now been at or over the .500 mark in back-to-back seasons for the first time in almost a decade. In 1999, Stumpf's first season as the head coach at UCSB, he took a team that was selected to finish last in the conference, but instead posted an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the Big West. Following the season, Stumpf was chosen as the Big West's Coach of the Year. Before arriving in Santa Barbara as an assistant coach in 1998, Stumpf spent two seasons as an assistant at Humboldt State. In addition, the San Diego native spent several years coaching club teams in the Santa Rosa area.

Sandza Ties Big West Record For Goals In A Season
Sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza scored her 22nd goal of the season in UCSB's 3-1 win over UC Irvine. The 22 goals ranks in a tie for third-place on the Gauchos' all-time list and it equals the Big West record set in 1987 by North Texas' Christy Johnson. The 22 goals ties her with Jennings for third and Sandza's next target is again Jennings, who holds the top two spots on the list. In 1983, as a freshman, Jennings had 26 goals and in 1984, as a sophomore, she had 34. In her two seasons, Sandza now has 29 goals and eight assists for 66 points. She ranks in a tie for fourth-place in career goals and seventh in points.

Borcich Comes Continues To Come Alive
As a freshman, Jennifer Borcich started slowly and emerged late in the season. In 2001, she paced the Big West in goals with 11 and points with 29. This year, she started out hot, had a lull at about the midseason mark, and is now on fire. She scored goals in both of last weekend's matches, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute against Long Beach State on Sunday. Borcich has now scored goals in five straight matches, including a three-goal hat trick at Utah State, and she has 15 goals on the season. Overall, the sophomore from Sacramento has scored 15 goals and seven assists for 37 points.

One-Two Punch Is Pretty Potent
The Sandza-Borcich combination is proving to be a fairly potent offensive weapon for the Gauchos. Combined, the dynamic duo has scored 37 goals and 13 assists for 87 points. The UCSB record for goals by a duo in a single-season is 47, set in 1984 by Carin Jennings (34) and Marleen Molenaar (13). The one-two punch record for points of 123, was also set in 1984 by Jennings (80) and Molenaar (43).

It Seems So Long Ago
Through 17 matches this season, UCSB has scored 52 goals, an average of 3.1 per match. To put those numbers in perspective, we need to go back a few years. In 1998, the Gauchos piled-up a total of 14 goals in 19 matches and in 1997, the scored just 13 in 19 matches. In fact, the 1997 and 1998 teams combined for just 27 goals and 353 shots, an average of 0.7 goals and 9.3 shots per game. This year, in addition to the 3.2 goals per match, UCSB is averaging 20.3 shots per contest.

Codington's Helping Hand
Senior midfielder Jen Codington is closing out her career by lending a helping hand to her teammates. Codington has not only equaled her career-high for goals in a season with three, but she has also produced eight assists, one more than her career total entering the season. In all, Codington has now scored nine goals and 15 assists for 33 total points in her career. More than statistics, however, she has been a staple in the Gaucho lineup for four seasons and is really the team's quarterback.

Shooting Gallery
It's no wonder UCSB is outscoring its opponents by two goals per match this season, they are outshooting them in a big way. The Gauchos have produced 346 shots this season, an average of 20.3 per match, while their opponents have attempted just 169, an average of 9.9 per outing. In fact, the Gauchos have attempted 71 more shots in 17 matches this season than they did in 19 matches last season. They have also scored 52 goals, 18 more than they did in 2001.
