The Gaucho Record
UC Santa Barbara improved to 10-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Big West play with a road win and a road tie over the weekend. On Friday afternoon, the Gauchos tied Utah State by a score of 3-3, and then on Sunday afternoon, they battered the University of Idaho, 6-0.
Streak Is Longest Since 1990
Although UCSB's unbeaten streak of six matches is modest, it is the longest the program has produced since the 1990 campaign. The Gauchos are 5-0-1 in their last six matches. Last season, UCSB had a five match winning streak. The 1990 Gauchos opened the season with a 12-0-1 record and a 13 match unbeaten streak, a streak that remains the longest in school history. In 1989, UCSB won 12 matches in a row, also a school record.
Sandza Cracks The 20 Goal Mark, Nears Big West Record
Sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza scored two goals in Friday night's 3-3 tie at Utah State, becoming the sixth Gaucho in school history to record a 20-goal season. With 21 goals on the year, Sandza ranks fourth on UCSB's all-time single-season list. On Friday, she passed Carin Jennings' 1986 total of 20 and Dianne Manore's 1987 total of 20. Sandza's next target is again Jennings, who holds the top three spots on the list. In 1985, as a junior, Jennings tallied 22 goals, in 1983, as a freshman, she had 26 and in 1984, as a sophomore, she had 36. So while Sandza needs just two goals to move into third-place on UCSB's all-time list, she also needs just two goals to move into the top spot on the Big West's all-time single-season list. Christy Johnson scored 22 goals for North Texas in 1997. In her two seasons, Sandza now has 28 goals and eight assists for 64 points. She ranks fifth in goals scored, one goal back of fourth-place, and seventh in points.
It Seems So Long Ago
Through 15 matches this season, UCSB has scored 48 goals, an average of 3.2 per match. To put those numbers in perspective, we need to go back a few years. In 1998, the Gauchos piled-up a total of 14 goals in 19 matches and in 1997, the scored just 13 in 19 matches. In fact, the 1997 and 1998 teams combined for just 27 goals and 353 shots, an average of 0.7 goals and 9.3 shots per game. This year, in addition to the 3.2 goals per match, UCSB is averaging 20.8 shots per contest.
Borcich Makes Her Mark
Sandza's recent exploits have overshadowed the consistently good play of sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich. Last year's leading scorer and Big West Offensive Player of the Year, Borcich has 13 goals and a seven assists for 33 points. In her one and a half seasons, Borcich has now scored 24 goals and 14 assists for 62 points. In Friday night's tie with Utah State, Borcich had one goal and then in Sunday's 6-0 win at Idaho, she had her first hat trick of the season, scoring three of UCSB's six goals.
A Bright Light
Freshman midfielder Kristyn Bright has started all 15 matches this year and has proven to be a solid contributor. In Sunday's win at Utah State, she scored a pair of goals, giving her three on the season. Bright, a native of Glendora, also has two assists for a total of eight points.
Seniors Prepare For Final Home Matches
Four Gaucho seniors will play their final home matches this weekend. Midfielder Jen Codington (three goals, seven assists for 13 points), forwards Erica Perrotta (one goal and two assists for four points) and Beth Ramos (14 matches), and defender Katie Wilson (15 matches, one assist) will all be playing in their final home matches. Codington has been a staple in the UCSB lineup since her freshman season when she played in 18 matches and started ten. Overall, the Concord native has played in 73 matches, starting 61. She has scored nine career goals and 14 assists for 32 points. Perrotta, who has missed the last six matches with a knee injury, has played in 62 contests over her career, starting 31. She has totaled five goals and 13 assists for 23 points. Wilson has played in 61 matches, starting 60 and while she has scored just two goals and two assists in her career, she has been one of the team's better stay-at-home defenders. Ramos, who transferred to UCSB from Sonoma State, has played in 35 matches, starting four, and has tallied one goal and one assist.
Shooting Gallery
It's no wonder UCSB is outscoring its opponents by two goals per match this season, they are outshooting them in a big way. The Gauchos have produced 312 shots this season, an average of 20.8 per match, while their opponents have attempted just 149, an average of 9.9 per outing. In fact, the Gauchos have attempted 51 more shots in 15 matches this season than they did in 19 matches last season. They have also scored 48 goals, 14 more than they did in 2001.
Road Rules
UCSB 's fate in the Big West will be determined on the road this season. The Gauchos enter this weekend's matches with ten points, tied for third in the league and five points behind Cal State Fullerton. Following this weekend's home matches, however, UCSB will hit the road for its final three, playing at UC Riverside on November 1, and then closing the year at Cal State Fullerton (November 3) and at Cal Poly (November 8), the two schools that currently sit in first and second-place respectively.
