The Gaucho Record
UC Santa Barbara opened the Big West season with narrow wins over Pacific and Cal State Northridge. On Friday night, the Gauchos edged Pacific in overtime, 1-0, and then on Sunday night, they tripped-up Cal State Northridge, 4-3. The pair of wins extended UCSB's winning streak to four games in a row and improved their records to 9-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big West Conference. The Gauchos have now won four straight and seven of their last eight.

On The Stumpf
Paul Stumpf is in his fourth season at UC Santa Barbara. He enters this week's action with a record of 37-28-4. Last season, he guided UCSB to an 11-7-1 record, and within to one game of the Big West Championship. 2001 marked the first time that UCSB had finished at over the .500 mark since 1993. UCSB has now been at or over the .500 mark in back-to-back seasons for the first time in almost a decade. In 1999, Stumpf's first season as the head coach at UCSB, he took a team that was selected to finish last in the conference, but instead posted an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the Big West. Following the season, Stumpf was chosen as the Big West's Coach of the Year. Before arriving in Santa Barbara as an assistant coach in 1998, Stumpf spent two seasons as an assistant at Humboldt State. In addition, the Santa Rosa native spent several years coaching club teams in the Santa Rosa area.

Sandza Selected Big West Player Of The Week
Sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza was selected Big West Player of the Week for the third time this season after her performances in UCSB's victories over Pacific and Cal State Northridge. In the two matches, Sandza had three goals and an assist. In Friday night's 1-0 win over Pacific, she scored the game-winning goal in the 101st-minute. On Sunday, she broke a 3-3 tie with a goal in the 81st-minute, giving the Gauchos a 4-3 win over Cal State Northridge.

Sandza Continues Scoring Assault
With three goals and an assist over the weekend, Sandza has now scored 19 goals and four assists for a total of 42 points. Her 19 goals and 42 points easily lead the Big West Conference. In fact, she is averagng 3.23 points per match as compared to the second-highest scorer, Regina McGee of Pacific, who is at 1.92 points per match. McGee is also second in the league with 11 goals scored. Sandza has scored all 19 of her goals and 41 of her points in the last 11 matches. The 19 goals are the most scored by a UCSB player in 15 years. She has tallied a goal in each of the last five matches, scoring a total of 11 over that span. As she continues to pile up goals, she continues to move up UCSB's single-season and career scoring lists. With her 19 goals and 42 points this season, she ranks tied for sixth and eighth on those respective lists. In her 32 matches over two seasons, Sandza has now scored 26 goals and seven assists for 59 points. Her 26 goals ranks sixth all-time and her 59 points ranks ninth. Finally, in an October 6 win at Air Force, Sandza scored a school-record five goals, breaking the record of four which had been accomplished eight times by five different players. In addition to her five goal match, she has two three-goal matches and a pair of two-goal matches as well.

It Seems So Long Ago
Through 13 matches this season, UCSB has scored 39 goals, an average of 3.0 per match. To put those numbers in perspective, we need to go back a few years. In 1998, the Gauchos piled-up a total of 14 goals in 19 matches and in 1997, the scored just 13 in 19 matches. In fact, the 1997 and 1998 teams combined for just 27 goals and 353 shots, an average of 0.7 goals and 9.3 shots per game. This year, in addition to the 3.0 goals per match, UCSB is averaging 20.5 shots per contest.

Not To Be Forgotten
Sandza's recent exploits have overshadowed the consistently good play of sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich. Last year's leading scorer and Big West Offensive Player of the Year, Borcich has nine goals and a six assists for 24 points. In her one and a half seasons, Borcich has now scored 20 goals and 13 assists for 53 points, the tenth-highest total in school history. If Borcich can score one more goal this year, she and Sandza would be the first Gaucho duo to hit the double-digit mark since 1990 when three players (Phronsie Franco, Laurie Hill and Trisha Kimble) scored ten or more.

Shooting Gallery
It's no wonder UCSB is outscoring its opponents by nearly two goals per match this season, they are outshooting them in a big way. The Gauchos have produced 267 shots this season, an average of 20.5 per match, while their opponents have attempted just 120, an average of 9.2 per outing.

Pros & Considine
Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Considine has taken over the starting role for UCSB. After coming off the bench in the first two matches of the season, Considine, who led her Coronado High School team to a CIF San Diego Section championship last year, entered the starting lineup in match three against TCU and that was all she wrote. She now has a 9-2-0 record, she has posted six shutouts and a goals against average of 0.93. Considine has allowed a total of nine goals in her 11 starts and she has 37 saves on the season. The three goals that she allowed in the win over Cal State Northridge, were the same total that she had given up in the eight matches prior.

Quick Shots
Sophomore forward Erin Griswold leads the Big West in assists with eight in her 13 matches. She also ranks in a tie for eighth in total points with 14...Sandza ranks fourth in the nation in goals scored with her 19 and as a team, the Gauchos rank 14th nationally...12 different Gauchos have assisted on goals this season...Of the 15 goals that UCSB has allowed this season, ten have come in the first half and only five have come in the second half and overtime...The Gauchos have had 61 corner kicks on the season, while the opposition has had just 29.
