UCSB Has Tough Assignment To Snap Winless Streak
When the Gauchos take the field on Sunday, they will be trying to snap a five-match winless streak. UCSB has gone 0-3-2 in its last five contests and of those five, four have gone to overtime. Santa Barbara will have a difficult assignment to break the streak. The Gauchos will take on the defending Big West Champion, Cal Poly. The Mustangs enter the weekend with an overall record of 12-1-1, a Big West mark of 3-0-1 and a national ranking of 17th.
Working Overtime
UCSB lost a 2-0 regulation decision on Sunday against UC Riverside, snapping a streak of four consecutive overtime matches. The Gauchos had recorded overtime ties against San Diego and UC Irvine and overtime losses to Long Beach State (1-0) and Pepperdine (3-2).
Sandza Joins Elite Group
Junior Krystal Sandza scored two goals in the second half of UCSB's overtime loss against Pepperdine. Her two goals forced the match to overtime and they gave Sandza 40 career goals. She became just the third UCSB player in history to record 40 career goals, joining four-time All-American and former United States National Team star Carin (Jennings) Gabarra who had 102 goals and Dianne Manore, who had 58. Sandza leads the Gauchos with eight goals and 19 points this season. In addition to ranking third all-time in goals, she also ranks third in points with 94.
Shooting Stars
Although UCSB has had trouble scoring goals in recent matches, they've tallied four goals in the last five contests, they have had no trouble getting shots off. On the year the Gauchos have outshot the opposition by a 252-142 count, an average of 7.9 shots per outing. During the five-match winless streak, they have outshot opponents 91-66, an average of five shots per game.
