Women's Soccer Drops Conference Championship-Deciding Match At Cal Poly, 2-0

Nov. 8, 2002

Final Stats

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - For the second time in the last three seasons, the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team played a season-ending match at Cal Poly that would decide the Big West Championship and who would represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament. And, for the second time in three seasons, the Mustangs defeated the Gauchos to earn the title and the berth in the NCAA Tourney.

Playing in a downpour and on a field that was virtually under water, Cal Poly shutdown UCSB's high-scoring offense and posted a 2-0 victory.

The heavy rainfall affected play, as the ball often stopped in puddles throughout the field with players falling constantly.

The Mustangs broke through late in the first half, as Megan Schlegel was taken down in the penalty box, drawing a penalty kick. Schlegel then converted the penalty kick at 42:59 to give the Mustangs the lead. It was her ninth goal of the season.

Cal Poly would double its lead later in the second half, as Alexa Jontulovich put in a rebound of a Schlegel shot at 72:56. It was her sixth goal of the season.

The Mustangs outshot the Gauchos, 13-8, becoming just the second team this year to produce more shots than UCSB.

Greta Shirdon made one save in goal for the Mustangs, picking up her eighth shutout of the season. UC Santa Barbara's Jamie Considine made seven saves before giving way to Katherine Schaefers late in the second half.

UCSB is now 13-5-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the Big West. Cal Poly improves to 14-6-0 overall and 8-1 in league.
