Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Fittingly, sophomore forward Kelsey Bollinger scored the only goal of the match Friday, to lead the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Cal Poly.
Bollinger was replacing freshman Jen Borcich in the Gaucho lineup. Borcich, UCSB and the Big West's leading scorer with 11 goals and 29 points, broke her right forearm in Sunday's loss to Cal State Fullerton. Bollinger's goal, her third of the season, came at the 9:52 mark in the first half, off of a feed up-the-middle from freshman midfielder Krystal Sandza.
The match was quite even. The Gauchos outshot the Mustangs by a margin of 8-7, but Cal Poly outshot UCSB in the second half 5-1. Senior Mary Gleason, playing her final regular season match as a Gaucho, recorded her sixth shutout of the season. Gleason had four saves, including three in the second half.
UCSB improves to 11-7-1 overall, 7-2-0 in the Big West. They finish in second-place in the league with 21 points. Cal Poly drops to 7-9-2 overall, 4-3-2 in league. For UCSB, the 11 wins marked the most by the program since 1993. In fact, this is the first time that the Gauchos finished over the .500 mark since 1993.
