Cal Poly won its second straight Big West Conference women's soccer title with a 2-0 win over top-seeded UC Santa Barbara in the tournament championship game at Anteater Stadium in Irvine Sunday. It was the second consecutive year that the teams had met in the tourney final.
Sophomore Sharon Day scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute and sophomore Danielle Camarena sealed the victory with a goal in the box off a corner kick by Stephanie Hedien at 67:11 to give the Mustangs the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The selection announcement for the national tournament will be on Monday (Nov. 8).
Third-seeded Cal Poly (11-2-6) outshot the Gauchos 13-4 as the Mustangs won their fourth straight game. Junior Liz Hill, who was named the tournament MVP, did not need to record any saves. Cal Poly also had seven corner kicks to UCSB's two. Gaucho junior goalkeeper Jamie Considine recorded two saves as UCSB had its four-game winning streak snapped in dropping to 13-6-2. The teams tied 0-0 during the regular season.
