Borcich Scores Twice as UCSB Edges UC Riverside 3-2 to Advance to Big West Championship Match

IRVINE, Calif. - Junior forward Jennifer Borcich scored two goals as second-seeded UC Santa Barbara held off UC Riverside, 3-2, in semifinal action of the Big West Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at Anteater Stadium in Irvine Friday night. The Gauchos will now face No. 1-seed Cal Poly in Sunday's 1:00 p.m. championship game at Anteater Stadium.

Borcich scored her first goal of the game at 27:04 off a corner kick by junior Randi Johns. UCSB sophomore Kristyn Bright scored an unassisted goal that deflected off a UC Riverside defender at 39:44 to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead at halftime.

UC Riverside sophomore Vanessa Chanez scored on a breakaway at 68:40 to put the Highlanders on the board. Less than a minute later at 69:35, Borcich scored off a cross from Johns to put UCSB up 3-1. UC Riverside applied the pressure late and the Highlanders' Jessica Armel scored off a pass from Amber Plumlee at 85:09 to cut the margin to 3-2 but the Gauchos hung on for the victory.

UC Riverside outshot UCSB 17-13 and freshman goalkeeper Tawny Poggio had four saves for the third-seeded Highlanders, who ended the season with an overall mark of 11-7-3.

UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Considine also had four saves as the Gauchos (11-5-4) won their fifth straight game.

As a side note, Borcich now has 13 goals on the season, the top mark in the Big West, and she has scored in six consecutive matches, the second longest streak of her career.
