IRVINE, Calif. -
Senior forward Jennifer Borcich recorded a hat trick, the third of her career and her second on the season, in leading top-seeded UC Santa Barbara past No. 4 seed Cal State Northridge, 4-2, in the first semifinal of the Big West Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium Friday night. The Gauchos will face the winner of Friday night's late game between Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly in the championship game Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Irvine.
UCSB built a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by sophomore Chandi Bickford (30:29) and Borcich (37:33). Northridge junior Brianna Monka opened a string of four goals in less than 15 minutes as she scored on a flurry in front of the goal at 71:14 off an assist from Kaitlyn Kelly to draw the Matadors within 2-1.
Borcich put the game away with back-to-back goals, scoring at 80:28 off a pass from Allie Kueny and at 83:52 on a header off a Randi Johns pass. Freshman Kristin Krohn scored for Northridge at 85:41 on a rebound to end the scoring.
Junior goalkeeper Jamie Considine had five saves for the Gauchos, who improved to 13-5-2 overall in winning their fourth straight game. Junior Karen Comstock did not record any saves for the Matadors, who fell to 12-6-1. UCSB held a slight 10-9 margin in shots.
Since opening the season at 1-3-0, Santa Barbara has gone 12-2-2. Borcich has now tallied 15 goals on the year and 56 in her career, the most ever by a Big West Conference player and third on the school's all-time list. Bickford's assist was her tenth of the season, tops in the league and on the Gauchos and the goal was her third of the season.
