Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Cal State Fullerton's Tennli Ulicny scored a goal 42 seconds into Sunday's Big West deciding match against UC Santa Barbara, and for the Gauchos, it only got worse.
After watching the Titans jump to a quick lead, UCSB started to pressure Fullerton goalkeeper Laura Janke, but with less than ten minutes gone in the match, Gaucho freshman forward Jen Borcich, the Big West's leading scorer with 11 goals and seven assists, suffered an injured left wrist. She left the match and did not return. From that point on, it was all Cal State Fullerton.
The Titans made it 2-0 at half on a goal by Kelllie Cox at the 25:21 mark. They continued the assault in the second half, with Kim Houg scoring at the 55:46 mark, and Michele Bannister notching one at the 59:08 mark, making it 4-0 Titans.
UCSB got one back at the 60:59 mark on a goal by Kathryn Fox, but Fullerton responded at the 74:45 mark on a goal by Jenny Mescher. The Gauchos scored the last goal of the match at the 83:09 mark when freshman Krystal Sandza pounded hom the rebound of a free kick from Jen Codington.
The victory gives Cal State Fullerton an overall record of 12-6-0, and a league mark of 7-1. More importantlly, it gives the Titans the Big West's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UCSB is now 10-7-1 overall, 6-2 in the Big West. The loss snaps a five match Gaucho winning streak.
UCSB returns home for its final match on Friday, November 9, when they host Cal Poly at 7:00 p.m.
