One-Two Punch Of Sandza & Borcich KO's UC Riverside In Women's Soccer, 2-0

Riverside, Calif. - The one-two scoring punch of sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza and sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich came through again, as the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team blanked remained in first-place in the Big West Conference with a 2-0 win at UC Riverside on Friday.

The victory extended UCSB's winning streak to four matches in a row and its unbeaten string to nine in a row. Over that span, the Gauchos have gone 8-0-1 and the nine game unbeaten string is the longest since 1990.

Borcich got the Gauchos on the board first scoring on an assist by Sandza at the 19:41 mark. For Borcich, it was her 16th goal of the season and it marked the sixth consecutive match in which she had score a goal. The assist was Sandza's seventh.

Sandza tallied UCSB's final goal in the 40th minute. The goal, which was unassisted, was Sandza's 23rd of the season, breaking the Big West single-season mark of 22 set in 1987 by North Texas' Christy Johnson. With her goal and assist, Sandza now has 53 total points on the year. Her 23 goals also ranks third on UCSB's all-time single-season list. Only four-time All-American Carin Jennings, who scored 34 goals in 1984 and 26 in 1983, ranks ahead of Sandza.

Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Considine notched six saves in posting her ninth shutout of the season, the most ever by a Gaucho freshman and the fourth most in school history. She also lowered her goals against average on the season to 0.88. UCSB outshot the Highlanders by a 19-11 margin.

Santa Barbara is now 13-3-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the Big West. With 19 points in the standings, the Gauchos remain in first place, one point ahead of second place Cal Poly, which blanked Cal State Fullerton in overtime on Friday. UC Riverside drops to 9-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Big West.

 

 

The Gauchos will continue their quest for the Big West championship on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Cal State Fullerton to take on the the 5-2-0 Titans in a 1:00 p.m. match. Fullerton is the defending Big West Champion.
