Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Freshman forward Jen Borcich scored two goals, the second coming with just 24-seconds remaining in the match, to lead UC Santa Barbara to a narrow 2-1 victory over visiting UC Riverside on Friday.
Borcich, the Big West Conference's leading scorer, pounded home a rebound of an Erica Perrotta shot. Perrotta, a junior forward, had dribbled the ball towards the goal mouth, from the corner, got past one Highlander defender and then drilled one at goalkeeper Katie Blank. Blank saved the first shot, her ninth of the night, but could not recover in time to stop Borcich's follow.
UCR scored first in the match when Tracy Schuster dribbled past a pair of Gaucho defenders and scored unassisted, slipping one past goalkeeper Mary Gleason at the 38:17 mark of the match.
Borcich, a native of Sacramento, was named Big West Player of the Week last week after scoring three goals and assisting on two others in a pair of Gaucho wins, tied the score just 43-seconds later, when she took a feed from senior midfielder Kathryn Fox, beat two defenders and placed a shot to the right of a diving Blank.
On the year, Borcich now has 11 goals and seven assists for a total of 29 points, all league-leading numbers.
The victory by the Gauchos was their fifth in a row, and it gives them a 6-1 league record. UCSB and Cal State Fullerton, a 2-1 winner over Cal Poly, are tied for first place in the Big West. The Gauchos and Titans meet in a showdown that will decide the Big West championship at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, in Santa Barbara.
Overall, UCSB is now 10-6-1. UC Riverside drops to 5-9-0 overall, 1-6-0 in the Big West.
