SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior forward Alma Martinez scored two goals and six other UC Santa Barbara players scored one goal apiece as the Gauchos routed Idaho in Big West women's soccer on Friday night, 8-0.
Junior midfielder Krystal Sandza got UCSB started early as she took a pass from junior forward Randi Johns, drove past a pair of Vandal defenders and buried a low shot into the back of the net. The goal came just 1:26 into the contest. Sandza and freshman Allie Kueny assisted on the next goal, by junior forward Jennifer Borcich, at the 8:39 mark. The goal was the tenth of the year for Borcich.
UCSB then scored three goals in the final 11:11 of the first half. Martinez scored her first of match at 33:49 off of an assist from freshman defender Chandi Bickford. Martinez scored again at 36:13 off of a pass from freshman midfielder Darci Gwartz. At the 41:55 mark, freshman midfielder Morgan Tanner scored on another assist by Gwartz. The halftime score was 5-0 Gauchos.
Santa Barbara made it 6-0 at 60:52 when Kueny scored off of a pass from another freshman, Ashley Young. Senior forward Alex Richey scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick at 77:22. Richey then assisted on a goal by Rachel Barner in the 81st-minute to make it 8-0 UCSB and that is the way it ended.
UCSB outshot the Vandals 27-7 in a match that was played on a rain-soaked and muddy field. Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Considine started for the Gauchos, playing the first 54:00 of the match. Senior Katherine Schaefers logged the final 36:00 to finish-off the shutout.

The victory improves Santa Barbara's record to 9-5-4 overall and 4-2-2 in Big West play. UCSB entered the match in sixth-place in the league, but still battling for a spot in the league tournament to be held next week at Cal State Fullerton. Idaho drops to 3-11-4 overall and 1-7-0 in the Big West.
The Gauchos end the regular season on Sunday, November 2 at 12:30 p.m. when they host Utah State in a match that should decide a Big West playoff spot.
