Gauchos Secure Top-Seed in Big West Tournament With 2-1 Win at Utah State

Oct. 31, 2004

Box Score

LOGAN, Utah - Senior forward Jennifer Borcich scored one goal and assisted on a second tally to lead the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team to a 2-1 road win at Utah State on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Gauchos a 7-1-1 Big West record and the top-seed in next week's Big West Tournament.

Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Steinriede put the Gauchos on the board first at the 30:47 mark when she knocked-home a header off of a cross from Borcich. Borcich made it 2-0 at the 78:45 mark when she headed-in a cross from senior forward Randi Johns.

Utah State cut the gap to 2-1 at 80:30 when Carlsie Harris scored unassisted on a rebound. The Aggies, however, could not get the equalizer in the final 9:30 of the contest.

Utah State outshot UCSB by a 15-12 count, but junior goalkeeper Jamie Considine was up to the task with three saves.

The win improves the Gauchos' record to 12-5-2 overall and 7-1-1 in league. Even if, as expected, Cal State Fullerton defeats UC Irvine in its regular season finale today, UCSB will receive the top-seed in next weekend's Big West Tournament by virtue of its regular season win over the Titans.

After opening the regular season with a 1-3 record, the Gauchos closed things out by going an outstanding 11-2-2. UCSB will be joined by Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and the defending league champion Cal Poly in the Big West Tournament, which will be held at UC Irvine on Friday and Sunday, November 5 and 7.
