MOSCOW, Idaho -
Senior forward Jennifer Borcich scored midway through the first half and the UC Santa Barbara defense did the rest as the Gauchos won at Idaho 1-0 on Friday afternoon.
Borcich scored her 11th goal of the season at the 22:51 mark. A centering pass from sophomore forward Chandi Bickford was misplayed by the Vandal defense and Borcich was there to put it home for the only goal of the contest.
The goal by the Gauchos was their first score in the first half of a match since a September 17 win at USF, a span of 11 contests.
UCSB had several other opportunities to add to the lead. In the closing minutes Bickford several defenders and the goalkeeper, but her shot went just to the outside of the left post. A few moments later, Bickford had a breakaway and was able to beat the keeper on the right side, but this time her shot hit the right post and was cleared by the Idaho defense.
The Gauchos outshot the Vandals by a 16-11 count. Junior goalkeeper Jamie Considine had five saves for UCSB and Lindsay Smith had six for Idaho. Santa Barbara has now allowed just three goals in eight Big West matches and just five goals in the last 13 matches overall.
The victory will keep UCSB in at least a tie for first place in the Big West Conference. The Gauchos are now 11-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in league. Idaho drops to 3-13-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the Big West. The shutout was the fourth in a row by UCSB against Idaho and it was the Gauchos ninth of the season.
UCSB will complete the regular season on Sunday, October 31, when it travels to Utah State for an 11:00 a.m. (PST) match. A win by the Gauchos would clinch them the top seed in next week's Big West Tournament.
