Women's Soccer Takes Over A Share Of First Place In Big West With 3-1 Win Over Long Beach State

Oct. 28, 2001

Final Stats

Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman Jen Borcich scored two goals, and freshman Krystal Sandza tallied one, as the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team moved into a tie for first-place in the Big West with a 3-1 win at Long Beach State on Sunday.

Borcich wasted little time giving the Gauchos a 1-0 lead, scoring an unassisted goal at the 8:50 mark. Just 20 seconds later, at the 9:10 mark, Sandza took a pass from Borcich and scored on a breakaway, giving UCSB a 2-0 lead. The goal was Sandza's sixth of the year.

Borcich continued the onslaught, scoring off assists from Kathryn Fox and Jen Codington, at the 21:46 mark. The goal was Borcich's team-leading ninth of the year.

Long Beach got on the board at the 39:43 mark of the first half, when Kelly Kaufman scored unassisted, making it 3-1 Gauchos at halftime.

Neither team could muster a goal in the second half. The defenses took over, and the Gauchos walked off with a 3-1 road victory.

With the win, the Gauchos are now 9-6-1 overall, and 5-1 in the Big West. The 5-1 record ties them with Cal State Fullerton for first-place in the Big West Conference. In fact, since an 0-3 start, UCSB has put together a 9-3-1 record. The Gauchos have won four in a row, two at home, and two on the road, outscoring the opposition by a 10-1 count over that period.

The Gauchos return to action on Friday, November 2, when they host UC Riverside in a match that will begin at 6:00 p.m. The UCSB men's team will play Cal State Northridge following the women's match.
