Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich scored at the 87:20 mark to lead the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout win over visiting Long Beach State on Sunday night.
With just over three minutes remaining in the match, the Gauchos were awarded an indirect free kick. Freshman forward Kelly Daugherty nudged the ball over to senior midfielder Jen Codington. Codington, one of five UCSB seniors playing their final home match, cut loose from about 15 yards outside the penalty box. The ball bounced off a defender in front of the goal and Borcich was there to drive it home for the only goal of the match and her 15th of the season.
Following Borcich's goal, the Gauchos played keep-away for the final 2:40 of the match. Prior to the goal, neither team had many chances to score, however midway through the second half, Borcich had a golden opportunity when she got past the 49er defense and went in one-on-one with Long Beach goalkeeper Hannah Cochrun. Borcich booted the ball straight into Cochrun's arms and the score remained 0-0.
Overall, the Gauchos narrowly outshot the 49ers, 11-10. Cochrun had five saves while UCSB freshman Jamie Considine had three.
The victory extends Santa Barbara's winning streak to three in a row and their unbeaten sting to eight in a row, the longest since 1990. The Gauchos are now 12-3-2 overall and at 5-0-1 in Big West they are the only unbeaten team remaining in league. Long Beach State drops to 5-9-4 overall and 3-2-2 in the Big West.
The Gauchos will play their final three matches of the season on the road. They will play at UC Riverside on Friday, November 1 at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, November 3, they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
