NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
With the way UC Santa Barbara (8-5-4, 3-2-2 Big West) was attacking, it was only a matter of time before someone found the net. Jennifer Borcich broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute to give the Gauchos a 2-0 win and send Cal State Northridge (3-11-3, 1-7-0 Big West) to its sixth consecutive loss.
UCSB got the first goal after a corner kick was bounced around near the net. A loose ball went into the air, and Borcich gained the advantage and sent a header to the back of the net.
Allie Kueny sealed the fate of the match with another goal less than two minutes later. Krystal Sandza fed a ball to Borcich who then made a fine pass to Kueny. From in close at the left side of the net, Kueny blasted one past Jasper into the right corner to make the score 2-0.
A close first half sent the teams to the locker room without a score. At the half, Santa Barbara led only 5-3 in shots as the Matador defense played well enough to keep the Gauchos in check. Jaime Considine made her only save in the first half and earned her eighth shutout of the season.
Jen Jasper made six saves for the Matadors, including several of the acrobatic kind, but she and the rest of the CSUN defense couldn't stop the powerful attack from UCSB. The Gauchos controlled the ball for the majority of the second half, outshooting Northridge 20-0 after the half. Santa Barbara applied constant pressure, barely missing on a few attempts before the goal from Borcich.
UCSB, which is now unbeaten in three straight matches, returns to action on Friday night when it hosts Idaho in the second half of a doubleheader with the Gaucho men's team. The Gaucho women will play at approximately 7:00 p.m.
