Irvine, Calif. -
The young were restless in UC Santa Barbara's women's soccer win at UC Irvine on Friday night.
The Gauchos extended their Big West Conference winning streak to three in a row, with a decisive 4-0 victory over the Anteaters, and it was the freshemen who dominated the match.
UCSB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. The Gauchos first goal came on a header by Erin Griswold, and was assisted by freshman Jen Borcich. Santa Barbara made it 2-0 in the 33rd-minute, when sophomore Kelsey Bollinger scored on a flick pass from Griswold. Borcich tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the year in the waning minutes of the first half, off of an assist from another freshman, Rachael Appleton.
In the second half, the Gauchos recorded a final goal in the 68th-minute, when Griswold scored off of a flick from Appleton.
UCSB's Mary Gleason recorded six saves for the third match in a row, and, for the third straight contest, posted a shutout. As a team, the Gaucho defense was outstanding. According to head coach Paul Stumpf, senior midfielder Kathryn Fox played the best match of her career to spur the defensive success.
The victory by the Gauchos improves them to 8-6-1 overall, 4-1 in the Big West Conference. With 12 points, they are now second in the league, and they have outscored Big West opponents by a 9-3 count. In fact, since an 0-3 start, the Gauchos have gone 8-3-1, and they outscored their opponents 19-9.
UCSB plays at Long Beach State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
