Long Beach, Calif. - Jenna Koontz scored scored a goal in the 54th minute to give Long Beach State a 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
The match was UCSB's final Big West soccer match of the season. Despite the loss, the Gauchos finish the conference schedule with a 5-4 record, their first winning season in league play ever. Overall, they drop to 8-8-1 with the loss.
UCSB scored its only goal of the match in the 48th minute when Beth Barbera hit a one-timer past 49er goalkeeper Jihan Elgazzar. Eric Perotta and Kathryn Fox assisted on the goal which tied the match 1-1 at the time.
The Gaucho improvement this year has been significant. Last season, UCSB finished 4-14-1 overall and 1-7-1 in league play. In fact, the eight overall wins are one more than the Gauchos had in the previous two seasons combined.
UCSB closes the regular season on Sunday, October 31 when it hosts Fresno State in a 10:00 a.m. match at Harder Stadium.
