SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Sophomore midfielder Darci Gwartz pounced on an open rebound just in front of the goal mouth and shoved it in just over one minute into overtime, to lead the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Cal State Northridge on Sunday night.
The Gauchos, who played the final 32:50 a player down after senior defender Cinthia Ruiz was red carded at the 58:22, held off the Matadors in regulation and then took advantage of the their first corner kick of the overtime. Freshman midfielder Nicole Remmenga nailed the corner kick and senior Molly Martin one-timed a shot that was saved by Northridge goakeeper Karen Comstock. The ball drifted to Gwartz, who was standing to Comstock's left, and the sophomore scored the golden goal.
Both goalkeepers played well to keep the match scoreless. Comstock had seven saves for the Matadors, while junior Jamie Considine had seven for the Gauchos.
The win improves UCSB's overall record to 10-5-2 and its league mark to 5-1-1, good for 16 points. The Gauchos move past Cal State Northridge and into a tie with Cal State Fullerton for first-place in the Big West. The Matadors drop to 11-4-2 overall, and 5-3 in the Big West, 15 points.
The match against Northridge was the final home match of the season for Santa Barbara. The Gauchos complete the regular season next weekend on the road at Idaho on Friday, October 29, and at Utah State on Sunday, October 31.
