Sandza Equals Big West Record For Goals In A Season As Women's Soccer Extend Unbeaten String To Seven With 3-1 Win Over UC Irvine

Oct. 25, 2002

Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza scored UCSB's first goal at the 25:03 mark in the first half, tying the Big West Conference record for goals in a season, to lead the Gaucho women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over visiting UC Irvine on Friday night in Santa Barbara.

Sandza's goal, which came off of an assist from Emilee Schwimmer, gives her 22 for the season, tying her with North Texas' Christy Johnson who set the record in 1997. The 22 tallies also ties Sandza with Carin Jennings for third on UCSB's all-time single-season list.

UC Irvine's Hayley McNallen tied the score with an unassisted goal at the 38:39 mark of the first half. The tie, however, didn't last long. At the 41:59 mark, junior forward Alma Martinez scored on a rebound of a Sandza shot that was blocked by Anteater goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy. For Martinez it was her fourth goal and for Sandza it was her sixth assist, making her the first Gaucho in 15 years to score 50 points in a season.

The score remained 2-1 Gauchos until the 80th minute when sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich dribbled into the penalty box, past two Anteater defenders who collided, and blasted one past McCarthy, making it 3-1 UCSB.

The Gauchos outshot the Anteaters 23-10. UCI's McCarthy had five saves, while UCSB's Jamie Considine needed just two.

With the win, the Gauchos extend their unbeaten string to seven matches in a row and they improve to 11-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 with 12 points in the Big West. UCI drops to 6-8-1 overall and 3-2-1 with ten points in the Big West. The 11 wins for UCSB, equals its season total of a year ago.

The Gauchos return to action on Sunday night when they host Long Beach State in a 7:00 p.m. contest. The match will mark UCSB's final home outing of the season.
