SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Mandi van Dorn scored on a header off of a corner kick from Jennifer Smiley in the 78th-minute to give the University of the Pacific a 1-0 win over UC Santa Barbara Friday at Harder Stadium.
The only goal of the match came on Pacific's first corner kick of the contest at the 77:13 mark. The win snaps UCSB's streak at seven in a row.
The Gauchos dominated for most of the match, outshooting the Tigers 15-10. Pacific goalkeeper Laura Guerin, however, was up to the challenge with seven saves. Guerin came up particularly big in the second half, making five of her seven saves, including three on shots by UCSB's Allie Kueny from point-blank range. Kueny led the Gauchos with five shots, including three on frame, all in the second half.
Santa Barbara goalkeeper Jamie Considine returned after missing the previous three matches due to injury. She produced five saves on Pacific's ten shots.
The loss drops UCSB to 9-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Big West. Pacific improves to 7-4-5 overall and 3-1-3 in the Big West. The Gauchos will play their final home match of the season on Sunday, October 24, when they host Cal State Northridge in a 7:00 p.m. match. The UCSB women's match will be part of a doubleheader with the Gaucho men, who host Cal Poly at 5:00 p.m. The UCSB-Cal Poly men's match was originally scheduled for Saturday night.
