First Half Goal Stands Up as Cal Poly Edges Gauchos, 1-0

Oct. 20, 2007

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Cal Poly midfielder Erica Zumbahlen scored an unassisted goal in the 43rd minute on Saturday and the visiting Mustangs held on for a 1-0 Big West victory over UC Santa Barbara.

Zumbahlen scored her goal at the 42:09 mark on an outstanding individual effort. After a throw in, she on the right sideline, she drove the ball towards the end line about 10 yards off the sideline. With a defender on her, Zumbahlen drove a shot from a near impossible angle, but the ball hit off of the far post and crossed the goal line. Gaucho goalkeeper Katie Wright had no chance on the perfect shot.

UCSB had a few solid opportunities to score. About 10 minutes into the match, midfielder Sami Svrcek took a loose ball along the top of the box. She slid a pass to defender Katrina Wright who was position at the upper left corner of the box. Wright drove a rocket towards the upper middle of the goal, but Cal Poly goalkeeper Alli Tramel made a leaping save to keep the game scoreless.

A few minutes later, Mustang midfielder Andruss Kaleena nearly broke the tie when she launched a hard shot from the top left corner of the box. The ball, however, hit the right goal post.

In the second half, Cal Poly had one solid opportunity to take a 2-0 lead. In the 79th minute, Zumbahlen picked up a loose ball about 15 yards in front of the UCSB goal. She lofted a shot to the upper middle of the goal, but Katrina Wright made the save for the Gauchos.

The Gauchos put the pressure on in the waning minutes, but their two best opportunities to score were a pair of shots by freshman forward Brooke Salyer and both were driven over the crossbar.

Santa Barbara (5-8-3 overall, 2-2 in the Big West) is winless in its last four matches. Cal Poly (5-8-1 overall, 3-1 in the Big West) has won four straight matches.

UCSB returns to action on Friday, Oct. 26 when it plays at Pacific. The Gauchos will play their final home match of the 2007 season on Sunday, Oct. 28 when they host UC Davis at noon.
