Final Stats
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Freshmen Krystal Sandza and Jen Borcich scored first half goals, and goalkeeper Mary Gleason made it stand up, as the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team won its second consecutive Big West Conference match, 2-0 over visiting Idaho.
Sandza scored the first goal of the match at the 10:10 mark, when she took a back-pass from Borcich, right up the middle, and drilled a shot past Vandal goalkeeper Tricia Haynes from about ten yards out. The goal was Sandza's fifth on the year.
The Gauchos second and final goal was a tremendous individual effort by Borcich. The freshman took a pass near the center of the field, dribbled past three Idaho defenders, creating a one-on-one with the Haynes. Borcich then shoved it past the goalkeeper, into the left hand side of the net. The score was Borcich's sixth of the year, tops on the Gaucho team, and she has also assisted on five others for a total of 17 points.
Gleason, a senior goalkeeper, came up with six saves on the afternoon to record her second straight shutout.
The Gauchos were outshot in the contest, 11-10. In fact, UCSB could muster only one second half shot on goal.
UCSB improves to 7-6-1 overall, 3-1 in the Big West. Idaho drops to 6-8-3 overall, and 0-5 in the Big West. UCSB travels to UC Irvine and Long Beach State for Big West matches next weekend.
