Gauchos Score Early and Late to Tie 19th-Ranked Cal Poly, 2-2

Oct. 19, 2003

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Jennifer Borcich scored off of a cross from Alma Martinez at the 87:17 mark on Sunday night, giving the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team a 2-2 tie with 19th-ranked Cal Poly, the first-place team in the Big West.

Borcich's goal, her seventh of the season, came just 1:40 after the Mustangs had taken a 2-1 lead. At 85:37, Cal Poly's Megan Gurney hit a corner kick from the left side and Kelsey Carroll headed the ball off of a Gaucho defender and past goalkeeper Jamie Considine.

UCSB took an early 1-0 lead. Forward Randi Johns played the ball down the right sideline, dribbled through a pair of Mustang defenders and hit a perfect through-ball to midfielder Krystal Sandza who was streaking down the middle. Sandza one-timed it past a diving Greta Shirdon and into the right side of the net. The goal was Sandza's ninth of the year.

Cal Poly waited until the very end of the first half to tie the score at 1-1. Forward Sharon Day dribbled down the right side of the field, cut in towards the penalty box and slid a perfect pass through the goal mouth to forward Alexa Jontulovich who drove the ball home with just four seconds remaining in the half.

Shirdon, the Mustang goalkeeper, played an outstanding match as she recorded 12 saves, including eight in the first half. UCSB's Considine finished with eight saves, including a spectacular leaping poke-away of a Day shot with just 1:15 remaining in the second overtime to preserve the tie.

UCSB outshot Cal Poly by a 20-16 count, but the Mustangs had seven shots in the overtime periods and the Gauchos had none.

The tie extends Santa Barbara's winless streak to six matches in a row. The Gauchos are now 6-5-4 overall and 1-2-2 in Big West play. Cal Poly is now 12-1-2 overall and 3-0-2 in league.

The Gauchos return to action on the road next weekend when they travel to Pacific on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match.
