Santa Barbara, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team climbed back to the .500 mark on Friday night with a 1-0 shutout over Utah State in Big West play.
Freshman forward Erin Griswold scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute, off a cross from senior Kathryn Fox, who had taken a soft through-ball from freshman midfielder Krystal Sandza.
Senior goalkeeper Mary Gleason did the rest, coming up with six saves on 12 Aggie shots. The most pressing moment was Utah State's final shot. Forward Brittany Baugh chipped one over the extended glove of Gleason, but the ball deflected off the crossbar and was cleared by defender Katie Wilson.
On the match, the Gauchos outshot the Aggies 12-11, but UCSB only had a couple of truly dangerous opportunities.
With the win, the Gauchos are now 6-6-1 overall, and 2-1 in Big West play. The Aggies drop to 5-7-1 overall, and 2-3 in the Big West. UCSB returns to the field on Sunday, when they host the University of Idaho in a 1:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
